One thing I’ve always remembered as a kid was when my dad would use Coffee-mate in everything. One thing he never thought to use on his Avena (oatmeal).
Now that I have my own child, I always like to instill the small things I would remember. My son comes from Hispanic, Black and White ethnicities but my husband loves to instill Hispanic culture the most. He’s always been in love with the food, culture and family ties that my family comes from.
The holidays always welcome family traditions big or small. Once November hits the holidays are always busy in my house. We always get so wrapped up in prepping for the main course that finding time for the most important meal of the day sometimes get skipped. That means breakfast is always missed and you could end up binging around dinner time.
Oatmeal is always a big part of my family since I remember. Plus, it’s a native favorite in many Hispanic traditions. There are many ways you can make it plus you’re able to add so much to it. Even as an adult I have learned to enjoy it so many different ways. You always want something quick but something tastes so good.
When you create and instill traditions around the holidays you want to make sure everyone enjoys them. You might remember as a kid when oatmeal tasted bland and even slimey. That’s definitely what I disliked about it. Now as someone who has their own family I want to make sure everyone enjoys it but still instill some type of tradition.
Using what my dad would always use in his coffee and everything he could add Coffee Mate to, I created a simple but tasty version of Avena.
Quick Tasty Holiday Avena
Ingredients
- 1 cup of plain oatmeal or a single packet of instant oatmeal
- ¾ cup of water
- A pinch of salt
- 1 cup of dried or fresh-cut up fruit
- 1-2 Tablespoons of Coffee-mate powdered sweetener (I love anything caramel so the Vanilla Caramel is my fave)
- Dash of cinnamon
Directions
- Pour oatmeal into a bowl
- Add ½ cup of water and place in microwave for 30 seconds (I tried using our hot water filter and it created a soupy substance so make sure you use microwave)
- Stir together. Depending on your preference add in rest of water
- Add dash of salt and mix together
- Mix in Coffee Mate (Use 1 tablespoon first depending on your keen for sweetness)
- Mix in fruit
- Add cinnamon if desired
You don’t need flavored oatmeal as Coffee Mate creates just the amount of sweetness.
This is a great recipe for those who dislike plain oatmeal but still want the whole family to have a simple meal before all the holiday festivities.
What are your favorite family traditions you love to spice up?
*You can find Coffee-mate at your local Walmart*
